GARDO delivers various donations

GARDO has donated a sum of 75,000 US dollars to Gabiley Regional Development Council(GRDC) for the reconstruction of Gabiley regional hospital. This is equivalent of 70% of the total cost of the reconstruction. This happened at a well organised and well attended ceremony that happened in Gabiley on 18/12/2009. In this ceremony the chair of GARDO transfered the donation of $75,000 to the Gabiley Regional Development Council

Haatuf News Item:- GARDO organisation which brings together the Diaspora in the UK whose roots are originally from Gabiley region of Somaliland organised a special event to hand over various donations to the people of Gabiley.

According to the Haatuf reporter Mohamed Hassan the donations handed over by GARDO representative in Somaliland, Mohamed Isaaq, were a complete X-ray system intended for the main Gabiley hospital, 29 bags of used clothes for the local orphanage in the area and 21 Desktop Personal Computers distributed evenly for following schools and government institutions:

  3. Arabsiyo secondary school, Arabsiyo
  4. Timacade secondary school, Gabiley
  5. Sh. Mohamed Warsame primary school, Gabiley
  6. New Gabiley primary school, Gabiley
  7. Imaamu Shaafi’I Quraanic school, Gabiley
  8. Gabiley orphanage centre, Gabiley
  9. The X-ray clinic, Gabiley hospital

Also the report mentioned that the local Education and Health departments received 1 computer each and the Training Centre for Gabiley received 5 computers while the local Government offices have been awarded with 3 computers and the police station received 1 computer.

The event was held in the main conference hall of the local government in Gabiley and was attended by members of the Government, among them was the Minster of Aviation, the mayor of Gabiley, two local representatives of the Parliament and other members of the local and social institutions.

At the start of the event Mohamed Isaaq from GARDO made opening speech and thanked all those people who attended the event and he briefly talked about the contributions made by GARDO since it was established on the 19st May 2001. He mentioned that the organisation started its first activities during 2003 and managed to deliver 6000 reference books to the local schools in 2003. Also he mentioned that later in 2004 it was possible for GARDO to deliver Sports facilities to the local schools and among them were 60 footballs accompanied by complete sportswear for the district team in 2005. Mr Isaaq continued to explain the other contributions made during last year and he talked about the establishment of a small building intended to house the X-RAY system which is now being handed over to the local Health Authority.

Following the opening speech, Mahmoud Ismail from GARDO briefly talked about the history of GARDO and the reasons of its establishment. Chief Aqil Abdi Abdulle Amaan gave a brief addressing and thanked GARDO for its contributions to the region. Also Dr Ahmed Nuur Ismail who is one of the local Health Authority explained the real needs for such equipments particularly the X-RAY system which he said it would go down very well with the local health requirements. He mentioned that the local patients travel to distant towns such as Hargeisa or Borama and once this is set up and starts to function properly it will cover such requirements.

Finally, the members of the government made separate speeches and explained the importance of such contributions. Mr Ahmed Haybe and Hassan Awalle who are both local representatives in the Somaliland Parliament stressed the importance of such projects and encouraged GARDO and other Diaspora organisations to do similar contributions. The Minster of Aviation, Mr Nuur Amin Ismail and Mayor of Gabiley Mr Mohamed Abaas Jama followed suit expressing their gratitude for such projects and congratulated GARDO for its achievements by delivering for the local needs.
